about

Three Quarter Time is the Oxford band’s ninth CD. As usual, traditional English songs and dance tunes feature heavily – often little-known material, or versions of songs which will be unfamiliar to most listeners. These are complemented by a handful of judiciously chosen modern compositions, including one apiece by band members Ian Giles and Andy Turner.
As usual, strong vocal performances abound – Magpie Lane are fortunate in being able to boast four lead vocalists, and all are on good form here, whether singing individually or in harmony.
As usual, the strength of the vocals is matched by the band’s instrumental work. For this album, the instrumental palette has been expanded with contributions from a number of the band’s friends, including Jackie Oates, John Spiers, Paul Sartin and Colin Fletcher. Thus, as well as the core instrumental line-up of fiddle, concertina, cello, guitar/bouzouki and percussion, there are additional strings, melodeons, oboe, clarinet, trumpet… and spoons.

"a further quintessential expression of Englishness and musical and vocal excellence...
If you want a demonstration of just how vibrant and alive and feelgood English music can be, conveying the Spirit Of The Dance while maintaining a firm and respectful grip on the traditions it upholds, then you need look no further than this exhilarating disc."
David Kidman in Living Tradition

"It's excellent...."
